The Battle of Rezang La was a major military encounter that took place on 18 November 1962 during the Sino-Indian War between the 13th Kumaon Regiment of the Indian Army and the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) of China. Charlie C Company, 120 Indian soldiers (all Ahir (Yadav)) from the Ahirwal region (Rajasthan and Haryana) faced over 3000 Chinese troops and successfully defended the strategic mountain pass of Rejang La in Ladakh. Fought at an altitude of 16,000 feet, against overwhelming Chinese forces, this battle witnessed the largest final battle, with over 1400 Chinese casualties according to Indian sources. Major Shaitan Singh, who led the defence, was posthumously awarded India’s highest military honour, the Param Vir Chakra, for his exceptional bravery. Several other decorations were awarded posthumously to many of the company’s officers and soldiers.
All India Yadav Mahasabha has planned to reach every village with the holy soil where Yadav people live so that all the people of the community can know their history and feel proud of the bravery of these martyrs. The Akhil Bharatiya Yadav Mahasabha has been demanding a separate Ahir regiment to pay tribute to the brave Ahirs.
