Jajpur (Odisha), Oct 8 :
The Jajpur Police have busted a highway snatching racket operating along National Highway-16 and arrested several persons allegedly involved in a series of robberies targeting travellers and truck drivers, officials said on Tuesday.
Acting on multiple complaints from commuters, a special police team conducted raids at several locations near Panikoili and Byasanagar and apprehended the accused. The gang allegedly used to intercept vehicles late at night, threaten occupants with sharp weapons, and decamp with cash, mobile phones, and valuables.
“Several accused have been arrested and further investigation is on to trace others involved in similar incidents across the region,” Jajpur Superintendent of Police Vinit Agrawal told PTI.
Police have recovered stolen mobile phones, cash, and two motorcycles used in the crimes. The accused were part of an organised network operating across neighbouring districts, preliminary investigations revealed.
Cases have been registered under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code, and efforts are underway to identify their associates, police said.
Local residents have appreciated the swift police action, saying it will help restore safety on the busy highway stretch.
